چکیده
Epizootic hemorrhagic disease is an important disease of cervids, especially white-tailed deer. The causative virus is widespread among wild cervids in North America, where white-tailed deer are endemic, and periodically causes serious epidemics in wild and/or captive populations. Sporadic clinical cases and outbreaks have also been reported in other cervids, cattle, bison, yaks and other animals, although most infections in these species seem to be subclinical. In Japan, the illness in cattle is called Ibaraki disease, and there have been several outbreaks of varying severity, with mortality rates as high as 10%. Since 2004, other serotypes of epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) have caused outbreaks in cattle and some other ruminants in the Middle East, the Caribbean and North America. Some of these outbreaks were extensive, although the illness was generally milder than in whitetailed deer. In addition to occasional deaths, these epidemics resulted in significant economic losses from decreased productivity, including reduced milk yield. Disease control is difficult, as EHDV is spread by Culicoides midges, and commercial vaccines for cattle are only produced in Japan.

Serosurvey for selected pathogens in hunter-killed pronghorns in western Nebraska.
Exposure of pronghorns (Antilocapra americana) in western Nebraska in 1983 to selected livestock pathogens was examined by serology and attempted virus isolation. Antibodies were present to the agents of bluetongue, epizootic hemorrhagic disease, and bovine respiratory syncytial virus. There were no serologic reactors to Brucella, and attempts to isolate the viruses of bluetongue and epizootic ...

Exposure of free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in western Nebraska to selected livestock pathogens was determined by serology and attempted virus isolation. Antibodies to bluetongue virus, epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus, and bovine respiratory syncytial virus were present in both species of deer. No serologic reactors to Brucella or ...
متن کاملSensitive identification of bluetongue virus serogroup by a colorimetric dual oligonucleotide sorbent assay of amplified viral nucleic acid.
A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedure coupled to an enzyme-linked oligonucleotide sorbent assay (ELOSA; a PCR-ELOSA) identified all 24 serotypic variants of bluetongue virus (BTV) without identifying any of six viruses belonging to the related epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus serogroup. The PCR-ELOSA detected 0.01 50% cell culture infectious doses of each serotype of BTV. The sensitivi...
متن کاملAnimal Diseases Caused by Orbiviruses, Algeria
Antibodies against bluetongue virus were detected in cattle, sheep, goats, and camels in Algeria in 2008. Antibodies against epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus were detected in cattle, but antibodies against African horse sickness virus were not detected in horses and mules. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease in northern Africa poses a major risk for the European Union.
متن کاملAnalysis of intratypic variation evident in an Ibaraki virus strain and its epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus serogroup.
A new strain of Ibaraki virus (IBAV) was isolated from cattle showing atypical symptoms of Ibaraki disease. The isolate was genetically characterized, and the genetic diversity and evolution of the capsid proteins of viruses in the epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) serogroup were investigated. The nucleotide sequences of the isolate's viral RNA segments 2, 3, 6, and 7, which encode the...
